University of North Texas System Chancellor Lesa Roe today named Shawn Ellis, MBA, CISSP, CISM, as the new Chief Information Officer for the UNT System. Set to begin his new position as CIO in September, 2019, Ellis will oversee the UNT System’s central information technology operation that supports the University of North Texas, University of North Texas at Dallas, University of North Texas Health Science Center and UNT System Administration.
Ellis will replace Interim Chief Information Officer Charlotte Russell, who will return to her full-time role as Chief Information Security Officer and Senior Director of Management and Risk Services. Ellis will join the UNT System following a two-year stint serving BBVA Compass as Senior Vice President, Engineering.
“We conducted a national search for this critical leadership position that impacts our universities and system as a whole on a daily basis, and Shawn stood out from other candidates based on his rich experience in both the public and private sector,” Roe said. “Shawn is clearly a leader with a passion for operational excellence, strategic technology growth and team development – we are excited to welcome him to our leadership team. We are also appreciative of Charlotte Russell’s hard work and leadership while service as Interim CIO since May.”
Prior to working for BBVA Compass, Ellis served as Chief Technology Officer for the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Associate Chief Information Officer at the University of Georgia. Overall he brings more than 25 years of technology experience and 16 years of executive leadership to North Texas.
Ellis holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems from Nova Southeastern University and a master’s degree in Business Administration from Georgia College. He also brings information security credentials and experience to the role as a Certified Information Security Systems Professional (CISSP) and a Certified Information Security Manager (CISM).
