Role and Scope

The UNT System Office of General Counsel is responsible for serving the legal needs of the Board of Regents, UNT System Administration, UNT, UNTHSC, UNT Dallas and the employees of each of these institutions when acting in the course and scope of employment. Alan Stucky, Vice Chancellor & General Counsel, supervises and directs the activities of an in-house staff of 8 attorneys and 3 legal assistants. In addition to its in-house staff, the office retains the services of outside counsel when highly specialized legal services are needed. Outside counsel may not be hired without obtaining the advance approval of, and following the hiring process of, the OGC and the Texas Attorney General’s Office.

Members of the UNT System community should contact the office about any and all legal issues involving the System or its institutions. Our attorneys provide legal services in a wide variety of practice areas, with the majority of our services devoted to litigation management, employment and equal opportunity, health care law, student affairs, sponsored research agreements, regulatory compliance, intellectual property, public governance, including open meetings and public information, policy development and interpretation, purchasing and sales of goods and services, real estate transactions, construction contracts, and ethics and conflicts of interest.

The Office of General Counsel cannot provide legal advice or representation to employees or students about legal issues of a personal nature, such as divorce, wills and landlord tenant issues. In addition, the OGC does not provide advice in matters unrelated to University business or to individuals whose interests are or may be adverse to the UNT System and its component institutions.
